The PFL has acquired Bellator MMA, PFL founder and chairman Donn Davis announced Monday.
While the specific purchase details have not been disclosed, PFL CEO Peter Murray described it as a “monumental” move for the growth of the PFL and the combat sports industry.
“Acquiring Bellator accelerates the global vision for the PFL and the sport of mixed martial arts. Bellator will operate separately, distinctly, but as a part of the PFL infrastructure,” said Murray.
The PFL’s acquisition of Bellator allows fighters to accumulate points in each league before participating in season finales with a US$ 1 million grand prize.
“We can’t wait to bring MMA fans what they have been asking for – best vs best with the PFL Champions vs Bellator Champions Mega-Event,” said Murray.
In August, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) became one of PFL’s benefactors by purchasing a minority stake via a subsidiary company.
The PFL is set to launch a Bellator International Champions Series as a platform for the MMA league to meet contract demands and a marketing tool for the PFL’s future initiatives.
“The best and most recognizable Bellator fighters will not be fighting here. And the PFL announcement did not even specify where Bellator fights would be televised, with Showtime getting out of combat sports,” said reporter Brett Okamoto.
Amid the impending changes, the PFL’s purchase of Bellator will bring world-class fighters to meet in intriguing matchups. Notably, a highly anticipated clash between the PFL’s Francis Ngannou and Bellator heavyweight champion Ryan Bader is on the horizon.
With a varied roster of talents, it is hoped that the PFL can develop these fighters and involve them in matches that can rival industry giants like the UFC.
“I think their cap table and their investors are just too smart to f— up. I don’t think they’ll ever be the No. 1, but I think they’ll be competitive,” said an MMA agent familiar with the PFL and Bellator’s current standings in the industry.
