San Jose Sharks select Quentin Musty to bolster prospect pool 17y43

The San Jose Sharks made a big addition to their prospect pool by selecting Sudbury Wolves’ Quentin Musty with their 26th overall pick during the NHL Draft. The 6-foot-2 had 78 points in 53 games during the regular season for the Wolves.

Before the draft, various organizations had rated Musty as one of the top prospects in the league. TSN’s Bob McKenzie also had him ranked 25th. Chris Morehouse, the Sharks’ scouting director, said Musty had the necessary skills and size to be a successful player in the league.

Morehouse also pointed out that during the second half of the season, Musty started to show signs of being a big, strong offensive player. The team is “thrilled to have that talent along with the size, the reach, and the ability to score.”

The selection of Musty marked the first time that a player from the region was taken in the first round since Tom McCollum was picked by the Detroit Red Wings in 2008 as a goalie. Before McCollum, the Chicago Blackhawks selected winger Patrick Kane in 2007.

The 18-year-old Musty will be attending the Sharks’ development camp next month. He’s one of the few younger players in the draft.

Musty will also be one of 44 players participating in the World Junior Showcase in late July. The event will feature games against Sweden and Finland. It’s part of the development of the U.S. team for the World Junior Championship.

According to Musty, he had around 60 friends and family at the NHL Draft in Nashville. He said that the wait for his name to be called during the draft was very stressful.

“There were some serious sweat stains going,” Musty said.

“Obviously the nerves are going, just trying to get through and it was a big relief hearing my name called, and getting to spend that moment with my family was great.”

Musty was seated in Section 115, Row B, where he sat with his parents. His friends and families were located on the 300 level. They cheered when the Sharks selected Musty, chanting, “Let’s go Q! Let’s go Q! Let’s go Q!”
