NASCAR Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 faced an unexpected delay as adverse weather conditions swept through Charlotte, NC. Originally, NASCAR scheduled the race to begin at 6:21 p.m. ET on Sunday, but the race had to be rescheduled to Monday due to persistent light to moderate rain throughout the day.
The inclement weather also affected the Xfinity Series race, initially slated for Saturday. After being rescheduled for 12 p.m. EST, the race has been moved again to 11 a.m. EST and will be broadcast on FS1. Following the Xfinity race, Coca-Cola 600 will start at 3 p.m. EST on FOX.
However, the postponements did not wither the excitement of a jam-packed weekend of motorsports events. Before the NASCAR race, Max Verstappen emerged victorious after leading every lap in Formula 1 in Monaco. Indianapolis 500 also saw Josef Newgarden triumph over Marcus Ericsson in a one-lap dash to the finish line.
For NASCAR, the rainy conditions caused havoc within the qualifying rounds, causing the cancellation of the Cup qualifying session. As a result, the starting lineup for the Coca-Cola 600 was determined based on NASCAR’s performance metric.
William Byron, who secured victory in the series’ most recent points-paying race at Darlington two weeks ago, claimed the pole position, having achieved the lowest metric score. Sharing the front row with Byron will be Kevin Harvick, while Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch complete the top five starting positions.
Chase Elliott, Bubba Wallace, Ryan Blaney, Christopher Bell and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. complete the lineup of the top ten starters.
Kyle Larson, the winner of last weekend’s All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway, will begin the Coca-Cola 600 in 12th place.
The weather forecast for Monday predicts cloudy conditions with a high temperature near 70° Fahrenheit and a 25 percent chance of a rain shower. NASCAR and race officials are optimistic that the rain showers will not cause any significant problems, allowing the race to go smoothly.
This marks the first time since 2009 that Charlotte Motor Speedway has moved the Coca-Cola 600 to Memorial Day.
