The Denver Nuggets defied the odds and emerged victorious over the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday, sweeping the Western Conference finals with a 113-111 Game 4 win. The Nikola Jokić-led Nuggets overcame LeBron James’ 40-point performance to secure their first-ever trip to the NBA Finals.
James delivered 21 points to give the Lakers a 34-26 lead in the first quarter. His shooting, including a four-of-four effort from the three-point distance, initially tipped the scales in favor of the Lakers.
However, the Nuggets refused to back down. Despite trailing by 15 points at halftime, they maintained their composure and displayed remarkable shooting efficiency, connecting 50 percent of their shots in the first half.
As the third quarter unfolded, the Nuggets mounted a fierce comeback. A 9-2 run to open the quarter forced the Lakers to call a timeout, and moments later, a layup by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope handed the Nuggets their first lead of the game at 82-81.
Jokić, known for his playmaking skills, delivered an NBA record-breaking eighth triple-double of the playoffs, suring Wilt Chamberlain.
Despite tense moments and a back-and-forth battle in the final minutes, the Nuggets showcased their ability to make crucial plays when it mattered most. A key layup by Jokić in traffic with 51.1 seconds left secured a well-deserved victory for the Nuggets.
Jamal Murray contributed 25 points for Denver, while Michael Porter Jr. battled through shooting struggles to provide a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Aaron Gordon’s stellar defensive performance in the closing moments shut down the Lakers’ chances of a comeback.
James’ valiant efforts were not enough to prevent the Lakers’ downfall. Anthony Davis’ contribution of 21 points and 14 rebounds added depth to the Lakers’ lineup, but the Nuggets’ superior team play and resilience were the deciding factors.
With only four wins away from securing their first NBA championship, the Nuggets are awaiting the winner between the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference finals.
