Chandler Stephenson’s overtime goal secured the Vegas Golden Knights a 3-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Sunday. Vegas now leads the Western Conference Final series 2-0.
Despite trailing 2-1, the Golden Knights rallied, with Jonathan Marchessault scoring a crucial goal with 2:22 remaining in the period, forcing the game into overtime.
“After that, it was like, ‘Alright, we’re back in this,’ and I think we have the belief that we’re not going to lose,” said Stephenson.
Both teams scored in the first period, with the Stars’ Miro Heiskanen finding the net at 2:47 and the Golden Knights equalizing at 10:08 through a 5-on-3 power play.
The intensity heightened in the second period as the Stars took a 2-1 lead when Jason Robertson scored at the 9:21 mark, putting the Golden Knights under pressure. However, Vegas rose to the challenge and pushed the game into overtime, which resulted in the win.
Stephenson, Marchessault and Mark Stone each contributed with goals and assists, while goalie Adin Hill made 26 saves.
Regardless of the win, Stephenson itted that he needed to control his emotion as he entered the penalty box twice during the game.
“I obviously need to keep my emotions a little more in check. You never want to give a team with a good power play two good opportunities. It was nice to finish it off with that,” said Stephenson.
With this win, the Golden Knights are two victories closer to securing their place in the Stanley Cup final. They are confident in their current team formation and are determined to clinch the championship.
“This year we have the best team we’ve ever had, not only on paper but in the way we play. I think that’s the biggest thing right now,” said Marchessault.
While the team is excited about returning to the championship round, Marchessault emphasized the need to focus on Game 3, which will take place in Dallas on Tuesday.
