The captain of the Edmonton Oilers, Connor McDavid, achieved another career milestone by scoring his 60th goal of the season on Wednesday against the Arizona Coyotes. He managed to reach this feat in just 72 games.
On February 27, McDavid scored his 50th goal of the season against the Boston Bruins in 61 games. “I felt like I was pressing for the 60th [goal] all night,” McDavid said.
McDavid attempted 13 shots within the game, with seven being on target. He scored his 59th goal of the season in the first period of the game as he played below the goal line and shot the puck off goaltender Connor Ingram’s mask into the net at the 5:47 mark.
He had to try twice on consecutive breakaways during overtime but eventually scored his second goal, his 60th of the season. This goal was vital because it secured the Oilers a 4-3 win over the Coyotes.
In the current season, McDavid has been scoring at an astonishing rate of 0.83 goals per game compared to his 0.49 goals across seven seasons. The 26-year-old is ten goals ahead of the second-placed David Pastrňák from the Bruins and is expected to secure the Rocket trophy.
Since ing the league, McDavid has been an exceptional player. From his debut in 2015 until the previous season’s conclusion, he has amassed an incredible 697 points in 497 games.
The captain currently tops the league with 138 points, while his teammate Leon Draisaitl is in second place with 110, putting him 10 points ahead of Tampa Bay Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov, who has 100 points.
McDavid’s point-per-game of 1.43 is also notably higher than Kucherov, who put up 1.25 points per game during the same period.
At his current scoring rate, the Oilers captain is projected to reach 68 goals in a single season, the highest number since former Pittsburgh Penguins player Mario Lemieux scored 69 goals in 1995-96.
The Canadian is only one goal away from his 300th career goal to become the third-fastest active player to achieve this milestone.
