The Toronto Maple Leafs re-added defenseman Luke Schenn to their roster ahead of the NHL trade deadline. At the same time, the team also traded Pierre Engvall to the New York Islanders and Rasmus Sandin to the Washington Capitals.
It has been nearly 15 years since the Leafs picked Schenn as the fifth overall pick in the 2008 draft. In exchange for the Saskatoon native, who will soon become an unrestricted free agent, the Leafs gave the Vancouver Canucks a third-round draft pick in June.
In 55 games this season, Schenn scored three goals and sent out eighteen assists for 21 points. In 918 regular games with the Leafs, Canucks, Arizona Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks and Tampa Bay Lightning, Schenn accumulated 190 points on 41 goals and 149 assists.
The 33-year-old, who won the Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in 2020 and 2021, also contributed three goals and three assists in 31 postseason games.
After four years with the Leafs, the team transferred Schenn to the Flyers for left winger James van Riemsdyk in 2012.
Along with the new deal, Toronto sent Sandin to Washington for defenseman Erik Gustafsson and a 2023 first-round pick. The Leafs also sent Engvall to the Islanders for a 2024 third-round pick.
Sandin, who was selected 29th overall last year, has so far scored four goals and tallied 20 points in 52 games. In 140 regular season games with the Leafs, the Swedish player scored ten goals and 48 points.
In 61 games played during the 2022-23 season, Gustafsson recorded 38 points from seven goals and 31 assists. The Edmonton Oilers selected Gustafsson in the fourth round of the 2012 NHL Draft.
The 30-year-old scored 39 goals throughout 370 career games with the Capitals, Flyers, Chicago Blackhawks, Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens. In 31 postseason games, Gustafsson contributed eight points with one goal and seven assists.
The 26-year-old Engvall, on the other hand, has scored 12 goals and accumulated 21 points across 58 games this season. The left winger, who Toronto selected in the sixth round in 2014, scored 42 goals in 226 games. In 17 playoff games, he chipped in four assists.
